A lot of people have been asking how I was able to make an impression on Daymond John from the Shark Tank, FUBU & Power of Broke. When I tell them the short answer “I lent him a copy of my Harry Potter Blu Ray” people don’t seem to get it. They ask why Harry Potter? Or is that his favorite movie? When I explain the psychology behind why I did what I did people are blown away.
Daymond John is a huge influencer in the fashion world, smart investor on Shark Tank, Bee Advocate and most of all he is HUMAN. All people naturally give away small tells, like in a poker game that will give you clues to how to leave an impression with them. How did I make Daymond John from the Shark Tank, FUBU & Power of Broke crack up? I watched him very closely. Obviously I watch Shark Tank like most entrepreneurs however you need to do more than what everyone else is doing.
In Mark Cubans book he says that at any given point someone is working harder than you trying to put you out of business. I take this to heart, making sure I put in more work than anyone else does to give me a competitive advantage. When I heard that Daymond John from the Shark Tank, FUBU & Power of Broke was coming to Tempe Arizona I started planning how I would break through the crowd of fans that showed up at his book signing with the same intentions.
Daymond John from the Shark Tank, FUBU & Power of Broke recently learning about social media shared a story of a woman who gave him a gift certificate during a keynote speech rather than giving a business card. This left such an impression with him that he did a whole social media post thanking her & giving a genuine shout out. Seeing that Daymond is a down to earth guy who can be effected by disruptive strategies of leaving an impression I knew this was my opportunity.
Following Daymond John from the Shark Tank, FUBU & Power of Broke on his social media I saw that he was excited to be on The Pyramid TV show competing against Barbara. I made sure to watch this episode for the most recent clues. During the show Daymond was asked several questions and there was one that stood out. The show works very simple, you have to get your team member to guess the word giving clues. Daymond John from the Shark Tank, FUBU & Power of Broke was asked who is Daniel Radcliffe and he immediately said “pass” being as raw and genuine as he could be. He has no clue that Harry Potter was played by the actor Daniel Radcliffe staying “I never saw the movies”. I knew right then and there I had to switch my strategy from getting him a Red Lobster Gift card( Daymond from the Shark Tank, FUBU & Power of Broke first started working at a Red Lobster and hating how it felt to see people walk in with money and success this was his first breaking point to become the creator of FUBU) I figured this would be a good way to break through but it was copying off someone else idea.
So this was it. I had an idea. I was going to give him a copy of my Harry Potter Blu Ray and put a note inside. I didn’t write a long pitch or even a long note. I think think it was a few lines at most.
I shared the same message I have been sharing with everyone. 1.5 Million dogs get rescued every year and over half get returned. If a business has a 50% return rate would you say that is a failed business?
I might have asked how do you train over half a million dogs at once? We Are Dog Training is the solution. I also put my general contact info.
So on the day of the Power of Broke book signing I made sure to be the first person there to get my ticket for the A section. It was worth it. When Daymond John from the Shark Tank, FUBU & Power of Broke walked into the room I was one of the few people who got to get a hand shake. After his opening speech the book signing began. I was maybe in the first 10 people to get my book signed so I needed to make sure he remembered me by the time he met close to 200 other people.
This was it, the moment of truth… I had already ordered an exclusive copy of his book that had a signature so he wrote me a short message. I told him I brought a copy of Harry Potter to lend you after watching you on The Pyramid the other night. Daymond John from the Shark Tank, FUBU & Power of Broke and his security guard Chauncey broke down and started cracking up! The best way to break through and leave an impression is to make them feel an emotion. Ever notice that most people on Shark Tank tell a story and get emotional. This is a strategic move. If you make someone feel an emotion you have a better chance at connecting with them. The one thing that Power Of Broke makes very clear is to always be genuine. I am who I am, and for me being funny is something I do.
